Learn How to Back Up a WordPress Website Using SiteGround

Back Up Your WordPress Website Using SiteGround

Don’t Risk It: A Simple Guide to Backing Up Your WordPress Site on SiteGround

Imagine this: You’ve just poured hours into a new landing page, updated your product listings, or published a blog post. Then a plugin update fails, a server issue happens, or something breaks your site. Without a backup, all that work could be lost.

Your website is a critical business asset. It’s your online storefront, marketing hub, and lead generator. A proper backup gives you the ability to restore everything quickly if something goes wrong. If your site is hosted on SiteGround, you already have powerful tools built in to protect it.

Option 1: SiteGround’s One-Click Backup Tool (Recommended)

This is the easiest and safest method for most users. SiteGround automatically creates daily backups and also allows you to create manual, on-demand backups before making changes.

  1. Log in to your SiteGround account and open Site Tools for your website.
  2. Go to Security → Backups.
  3. Under Create New Backup, enter a name (for example: “Before Plugin Update”).
  4. Click Create.

Your full website files and database will be backed up. To restore, return to the same screen, choose a backup, and click restore.

Option 2: Manual WordPress Backup (Advanced)

A full manual backup includes both your website files and your database.

Part 1: Backing Up Files with FTP

  • Use an FTP client such as FileZilla.
  • Get your FTP login from Site Tools → Site → FTP Accounts.
  • Connect and download the entire public_html folder to your computer.

Part 2: Backing Up the Database

  • Find your database name in the wp-config.php file (look for DB_NAME).
  • Go to Site Tools → Site → MySQL → phpMyAdmin.
  • Select your database, click Export, choose Quick and SQL, then download the file.

With both the files and database saved, you have a complete offline backup of your website.

Better Safe Than Sorry

Whether you use SiteGround’s one-click backups or manual exports, having a backup strategy is essential. A few minutes of preparation can save hours of recovery time and prevent major data loss if something ever goes wrong.
